When it comes to managing visitor registrations efficiently, the Drivers License form plays a crucial role. This form is designed to facilitate the scanning of driver licenses and IDs, capturing essential information for record-keeping purposes. Utilizing advanced technology like Optical Character Recognition (OCR), the form aims to streamline data entry by converting scanned images into editable text. However, it’s important to note that while OCR technology can achieve a high recognition rate of 95-99%, it is not infallible. Newer driver license designs often incorporate holograms, which can obscure text and complicate the scanning process. To address these challenges, Card Scanning Solutions has introduced updated scanners, such as the Snapshell IDR, which are better equipped to handle licenses with hidden text. Regular updates to the SDK ensure compatibility with the latest license designs, and users are encouraged to stay informed about these updates to maximize scanning accuracy. If issues arise during the scanning process, the form provides clear troubleshooting steps to help users identify and resolve common problems, ensuring a smooth registration experience for everyone involved.

LobbyWorks® 4.0 – Scanning Business Cards, Driver Licenses and IDs

Updated: 26 May 2011

Scanning business cards and driver licenses is a great way to capture a complete ID image for record keeping and to streamline data entry during visitor registration. Card scanning utilizes a technology called Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and a pattern recognition algorithm to identify unique driver license templates for processing.

Important notes:

1)The goal of OCR technology is to achieve the highest recognition rate possible; however, no currently available OCR technology is 100% accurate. LobbyWorks® uses an SDK, and supported card scanners measure a per-character accuracy rate of 95-99% when the technology is properly set up.

2)Many new driver license designs have been updated to include one or more holograms as a method to prevent/detect fake IDs. In the new designs, the holograms often obstruct the text that the OCR technology is attempting to decipher. Card Scanning Solutions has created a new scanner, the Snapshell IDR (Honeywell part # LWVMSSNAP), with improved light management to improve capture of data from licenses where text is hidden behind holograms. The 800 scanner does not have same capability, so we encourage users who experience OCR problems with holograms on newer IDs/licenses to consider upgrading to a Snapshell IDR model.

3)Card Scanning Solutions releases SDK updates on a regular basis due to the continuous introduction of new and updated driver license designs. If you encounter an unsupported license template, the best recommendation is to update to the latest CSS SDK to attempt to resolve the problem. LobbyWorks has been updated in v4.0.6.1 to install the full CSS SDK to enable easier SDK updates in the field. Important: If the newest SDK does not resolve the problem, you will need to collect a secure scan to provide to Honeywell technical support for forwarding to CSS.

What does a per-character accuracy rate mean?

A 99% OCR accuracy rate does not mean that only one license out of 100 will be wrong. It means that approximately one character will misread on every license (assuming that each license has approximately 100 characters). A misread could be O vs 0, i vs l, u vs v, etc. This does not mean that every card will have one mistake – you could have three cards read perfectly and one card with multiple mistakes.

Why do some licenses work in Autodetect mode while for other licenses I need to select a specific state?

Auto detection like OCR works on visual information but instead of looking for characters it is looking for shapes, usually the shape of the word that represents the state or some other unique identifier that can only be found on one state. To help the SDK with auto detection, it is important that the scanned image shows the entire card and that the image is good.

How do I recalibrate the 800 scanner on LobbyWorks 4.0.6.1 or later?

When calibration of the scanner completes via Front Desk or Kiosk, the following files will be created in the ScanShell800 folder in the system:

PixGan6.dat

PixGanG6.dat

PixOff6.dat

PixOffG6.dat

Your Questions, Answered

What should I do if a driver license is not scanning properly?

If a driver license is not scanning properly, first check whether the fields are being captured correctly. For the best results, ensure you are using the correct settings in the LobbyWorks software. If you are using an older model scanner, consider upgrading to a Snapshell IDR model, which is designed to handle newer licenses that may have holograms obstructing text. Additionally, make sure you have the latest CSS SDK installed, as updates can resolve compatibility issues. If problems persist, collect a secure scan and forward it to Honeywell technical support for further assistance.

What does a per-character accuracy rate mean?

A per-character accuracy rate indicates how often the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology misreads characters on scanned licenses. For example, a 99% accuracy rate suggests that, on average, one character may be misread for every 100 characters scanned. This does not imply that every scanned license will have one mistake; rather, some may be read perfectly while others could have multiple errors. Understanding this can help set realistic expectations when using the technology.

Why do some licenses work in Autodetect mode while others require selecting a specific state?

Autodetect mode relies on recognizing unique visual identifiers, such as the shape of the word representing the state on the license. Some licenses may not have distinctive features that allow the software to identify the state automatically. In these cases, you will need to manually select the state for accurate processing. To improve the chances of successful autodetection, ensure that the scanned image is clear and captures the entire card.

How do I recalibrate the 800 scanner on LobbyWorks 4.0.6.1 or later?

To recalibrate the 800 scanner, first delete specific calibration files located in the ScanShell800 folder on your system. These files include PixGan6.dat, PixGanG6.dat, PixOff6.dat, and PixOffG6.dat. After deleting these files, relaunch the Front Desk or Kiosk application. This process should help reset the scanner's calibration and improve its performance. Be sure to follow the correct file path based on your operating system to locate the folder.

What should I do if Front Desk does not detect the scanner?

If Front Desk fails to detect the scanner, start by ensuring that no other applications are using the scanner simultaneously, as it can only connect to one software at a time. If this does not resolve the issue, check that the scanner driver is properly installed. You may need to uninstall and then reinstall both the driver and the CSS SDK. Additionally, if you are using an 800 model scanner, recalibrating it may help restore functionality.

Gathering these documents in advance can help streamline the application process for a driver's license. Ensuring all required forms are complete and accurate will facilitate a smoother experience at the DMV.

Similar forms

The driver's license form is similar to a passport in several ways. Both documents serve as official identification and are often required for travel, banking, and various legal transactions. They contain personal information such as name, date of birth, and address, making them essential for verifying identity. Additionally, both documents may include security features like holograms or barcodes to prevent forgery. Just as a driver's license is issued by a state authority, a passport is issued by the federal government, ensuring a level of trust and recognition across different jurisdictions.

Another document akin to the driver's license is a state-issued identification card. This card is designed for individuals who do not drive but still need an official form of ID. Like a driver's license, it contains personal details and may also feature a photo. Both documents serve similar purposes in identification and can be used in various scenarios, such as verifying age or identity when purchasing age-restricted items or when checking into hotels. The processes for obtaining both types of ID typically involve providing proof of identity and residency.

Social Security cards also share similarities with driver's licenses. While primarily used for tracking earnings and benefits, Social Security cards are often required for employment and other legal purposes. Both documents include personal information and are vital for identity verification. However, unlike driver's licenses, Social Security cards do not contain a photo and are not typically used for travel or age verification. Nevertheless, both serve as critical components of an individual's identity documentation portfolio.

Voter registration cards are another document similar to driver's licenses. Both serve to confirm identity and eligibility for specific rights, such as voting or driving. A voter registration card typically includes the individual's name, address, and voting district, much like a driver's license includes similar personal details. Both documents are essential for participating in civic duties and often require similar documentation for issuance, reinforcing their importance in the realm of identity verification.

Employee identification cards are also comparable to driver's licenses. These cards are issued by employers and serve as proof of employment and identity within a specific organization. Similar to a driver's license, they often include a photo and personal details. Employee IDs are used for access control and can be required for various workplace activities, just as a driver's license is necessary for legal driving and identification purposes. Both documents play a significant role in establishing identity in different contexts.

Credit cards can be seen as another form of identification similar to driver's licenses. While primarily used for financial transactions, they also serve as a means of verifying identity when making purchases. Credit cards include the cardholder's name, account number, and expiration date, which are crucial for authentication. Like a driver's license, they often require a signature or PIN for verification. However, credit cards are not government-issued, which distinguishes them from the more formal identification provided by a driver's license.

Finally, student identification cards are akin to driver's licenses, particularly for younger individuals. These cards are issued by educational institutions and serve as proof of enrollment and identity. Like driver's licenses, student IDs typically feature a photo and personal information. They are often used for accessing campus facilities, purchasing discounted tickets, or verifying age for certain services. Both types of identification are essential for their respective contexts, providing a means of recognition and validation.

Misconceptions

Misconceptions about the Drivers License form can lead to confusion and inefficiencies. Here are six common misunderstandings:

  • OCR technology is 100% accurate. Many users believe that the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology will read driver licenses without any errors. In reality, even the best OCR systems have an accuracy rate between 95-99%, meaning that some characters may be misread.
  • All driver licenses are compatible with every scanner. Some users assume that any scanner will work with all driver license models. However, newer licenses with holograms may not scan properly with older models, such as the 800 scanner. Upgrading to a more advanced scanner, like the Snapshell IDR, may be necessary for optimal performance.
  • Updating the SDK will resolve all scanning issues. While keeping the Software Development Kit (SDK) updated is important, it does not guarantee that all problems will be fixed. If an unsupported license template is encountered, users may still need to provide a secure scan for technical support.
  • Recalibrating the scanner is unnecessary. Some users believe that once a scanner is calibrated, it does not need further adjustments. In fact, recalibrating the scanner can significantly improve the accuracy of scans, especially if issues arise with the image capture.
  • Auto-detection works perfectly for all licenses. Many users think that the auto-detect feature will always identify licenses correctly. However, this feature relies on visual information and may struggle with certain designs or shapes, necessitating manual selection of the state.
  • Driver licenses without holograms will always scan correctly. Users may assume that licenses lacking holograms will not present any scanning issues. However, other factors, such as the quality of the scanned image or the orientation of the card, can still affect the accuracy of the scan.
